Earth Day




Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 and has been an important day ever since.  It's a day to reflect on our planet, our environment and what we can do to help keep them healthy.
From the beginning, children and schools were approached to support the formation and continuation of this special day.  And this makes sense!  Children have the most important stake in keeping our planet healthy.  They'll still be the caretakers long after their parents and grandparents have passed away.

What Did Earth Day Accomplish? 

Well, after the first earth day in 1970 here's what happened:
  • The Environmental Protection Agency was established later in 1970.
  • The tough Clean Air Act of 1970 was passed.
  • The Federal Occupational Health and Safety Act aimed at "in-plant pollution".
Other countries have accomplished similar achievements.
But this is one of those jobs that's never complete.  Global warming and other issues never conceived of in 1970 are now common themes on the news.

What Did Earth Day 1990 Achieve?

  • The UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Earth Summit was the largest collection of national political leaders ever to meet in one place.  It made some important initial steps toward addressing climate change and preserving biodiversity.
  • More than a dozen countries established eco-labeling programs to guide consumers toward environmentally preferable goods and services.
  • Several Eastern European nations, responding to public demand, established new environmental protection agencies.
  • CARE, the international relief agency, set out new environmental goals for itself in the 1990s that include planting 500,000,000 trees worldwide.
And in the new millenium there's still lots to do! 

But, What Can I Do?

All these big "news stories" are great, but what does that really have to do with you and me?  I mean, we're not part of the U.N.  Or anything important like that.
But we are important!  If it's important to us, then it's important to our leaders.  You can start with things like using recycled items in your crafting (most of the items on this site are!).  You can learn about your local areas recycling program.  Help your parents sort the recycling.  Encourage them to recycle (donate some of your allowance to purchase a small home recycle bin -- now that will get their attention!)  This is one of those times where the kids may be teaching the parents.
You can do the same thing at school, clubs, home and anywhere else you spend time.
Let others know what you've done!  Write a letter to your local government representative and let them know how much you care about the environment and what work you've put in to improve it.  There's nothing more inspiring than seeing people put thought into action!  It's simple to write to someone and say, "Hey!   Fix the environment!" but it's more convincing if that same note read, "Hey!  Here's what I'm doing to help fix the environment!!   Do you have any ideas on what else I could do?  What are you up to to solve the same problem?"
But the most important part is to be aware and make others aware every day of the year!

World Environment Day

Every June 5th is a day used by the United Nations to stimulate worldwide awareness of environmental issues.
World Environment Day began in 1972 as a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.
 
(Cada 5 de xuño é o día nomeado polas Nacións Unidas para fomentar a conciencia mundial para as cuestións ambientais.
O Día Mundial do Medio Ambiente comezou en 1972 como un día para persoas de todas as clases sociais, países e condicións se unan para garantir unha visión máis limpa, máis verde e máis brillante para nos mesmos e para as xeracións futuras.)

Trees


Let's learn about trees in English!

Trees are an important part of our world. They provide wood for building and pulp for making paper. They provide homes for all sorts of insects, birds and other animals. Many types of fruits and nuts come from trees -- including apples, oranges, walnuts, pears and peaches. Even the sap of trees is useful as food for insects.

Trees also help to keep our air clean and our ecosystems healthy. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Trees breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. We're perfect partners!

Trees do lots for us, our environment and other plants and animals in nature but we don't just love trees for practical reasons. Trees can also be very beautiful -- tall enough they seem to touch the sky and so big around you can't even hug them. Thousands of artists, professional and amateur alike have painted pictures of trees and thousands of poems, songs and stories have been written about them.

Types of Trees:

There are two main types of trees: deciduous and evergreen. Deciduous trees lose all of their leaves for part of the year. In cold climates, this happens during the autumn so that the trees are bare throughout the winter. In hot and dry climates, deciduous trees usually lose their leaves during the dry season.

Evergreen trees don't lose all of their leaves at the same time -- they always have some foliage. They do lose their leaves a little at a time with new ones growing in to replace the old but a healthy evergreen tree is never completely without leaves.

Roots:

The roots are the part of the tree that grows underground. Trees have a lot of roots -- the size of the root system is usually as big as the part of the tree above the ground. This is necessary because the roots help support the tree.
Besides keeping the tree from tipping over, the main job of the roots is to collect water and nutrients from the soil and to store them for times when there isn't as much available.

Crown:

The crown is made up of the leaves and branches at the top of a tree. The crown shades the roots, collects energy from the sun (photosynthesis) and allows the tree to remove extra water to keep it cool (transpiration -- similar to sweating in animals). The crowns of trees come in many shapes and sizes!

Leaves:

Leaves are the part of the crown of a tree. They are the part of the tree that converts energy into food (sugar). Leaves are the food factories of a tree. They contain a very special substance called chlorophyll -- it is chlorophyll that gives leaves their green colour. Chlorophyll is an extremely important biomolecule, used in photosynthesis -- leaves use the sun’s energy to convert carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water from the soil into sugar and oxygen. The sugar, which is the tree’s food, is either used or stored in the branches, trunk and roots. The oxygen is released back into the atmosphere.

Branches:

The branches provide the support to distribute the leaves efficiently for the type of tree and the environment. They also serve as conduits for water and nutrients and as storage for extra sugar.

Trunk:

The trunk of the tree provides its shape and support and holds up the crown. The trunk transports water and nutrients from the soil and sugar from the leaves.

Parts of the Trunk:

Inside the trunk of a tree are a number of rings. Each year of the tree's life a new ring is added so many people refer to them as the annual rings. The rings are actually made up of different parts:

30 DE XANEIRO, DÍA DA PAZ



O noso mural da paz coas catro cancións que iamos cantar

Atopamos unha unidade didáctica chamada "Investiga sobre a Paz" feita polos compañeiros do C.E.I.P. Mestres Goldar de Vigo . que consideramos moi educativa e informativa porque nos alenta a investigar sobre a Paz.

Todos os ciclos preparamos unha canción sobre a paz e o día 30 cantámolas á entrada da mañá, ao vir do recreo, antes de ir ao comedor e na entrada da tarde.

Os máis pequenos cantaron unha canción de Juanes: "Paz, Paz, Paz"




Os nenos e nenas do 1º ciclo cantaron "Que canten os nenos" de José Luis Perales.
 Os alumnos e alumnas do 2º ciclo cantaron "I've got peace like a river" que é unha canción clásica en inglés sobre o tema da Paz.
 



E o 3º ciclo cantou unha versión en galego de "Los niños queremos la paz" que vos deixamos aquí:
                        Parouse o reloxio no andén, da estación.




                                               Despertou, unha canción nun rincón do corazón.
                                               Son de aquí, son de alá… marcharon sen poder falar.
                                               a familia, somos todos enunca, imos a olvidar.
